불친절한 안내 Unfriendly guidance (2025. ink on korean paper. 130X130) '나는 아무것도 아니다.'로 시작하는 패트릭 모디아노의 소설 <어두운 상점들의 거리>에서 주인공은 기억을 잃기 전의 자신이 누구였는지 알기 위해 미궁 아닌 미궁을 헤맨다. 정말 형편없이 부족한 단서들과 잠깐 등장해서 헛갈리는 힌트만을 던지고 퇴장하는 여러 인물들. 하지만 주인공의 입장에서는 찢어진 휴지 조각에 반쯤 날아간 메모 내용마저도 긁지 않은 복권이며 자신이라는 조각상의 부서진 일부에 딱 맞는 파편과 같겠다. 그렇게 몽롱한 사람들의 희미한 안내들이어도 가슴깊이 받아 드는 주인공의 모습에서 나는 주인공이 자신을 '존재'로서 너무나 깊이 인정하고 있음을 느낀다. 밤을 밝히고 적막의 틈을 주지 않는 온갖 만들어진 빛과 소리들은 우리 인간으로부터 무언가를 숨기기 위해 이 세계가 꾸민 세트장 아닐까 한다. 인간으로 하여금 스스로 이룩한 번영과 끝 모를 욕망으로 인한 부작용의 산물이라고 여기게끔 해놓고는 그것들을 설쩍설쩍 이용하여 보물찾기 놀이를 한다. 숨기면서도 찾길 바라고 찾았어도 찾았다는 걸 인간이 발설하지 않길 바라는, 이 세계가 아주 고이 여기는 것. 그것은 아마도 인간은 인간이기 이전에 그저 '존재'라는 것. 그리고 그것이 그 무엇보다도 우리가 누려야 할 최대의 환희라는 것. 우리는 무엇에 초점을 두고 살아가는가. 달인 듯 해인 듯 알 수 없는 천체와 나를 도대체 어디로 몰고 가는지 알 길 없는 이 세계의 장난스런 안내는 자꾸만 다른 것에 한눈파는 우리가 끝내 자신이라는 근본, 생명이라는 근본, '있음'이라는 가장 기쁜 본질에 닿게끔 인도하는 것이리. In Patrick Modiano's novel "Missing Person," which begins with the line "I am nothing," the protagonist wanders through a labyrinth of mystery, searching for the truth about who he was before losing his memory. The clues are woefully inadequate, and various characters only appear briefly, dropping confusing hints before departing. Yet, from the protagonist's perspective, even a half-missing note on a a torn tissue feels like an unscratched lottery ticket and a shard that fits perfectly into the broken parts of his own statue. In the protagonist's way of accepting even the faint guidance of such vague people with all his heart, I feel that the protagonist deeply acknowledges himself as a 'Being'. All the manufactured lights and sounds that illuminate the night and leave no room for silence, aren't they a stage this world has constructed to hide something from us humans? This world makes us believe they are the byproducts of our own prosperity and endless desires, and then they use them in a game of treasure hunting. The thing this world holds dear, hides them, hoping we'll find them, and even when we do, hopes we won't reveal it. Perhaps this is the truth that, before being human, humans are simply "existences." And that, more than anything else, is the greatest joy we deserve. What do we focus on in life?
