홀리데이 마카 드로잉 2023, 종이 위 마카, 28x21cm #daf 🇮🇹 같은 언어를 쓰는 이 나라에서도 나는 낯설고 서툴렀고, 쉽게 사람들에게 지치고 이 사회가 내겐 버거워 알아들을 수 없는 언어를 쓰는 나라로 회피성 도피를 갔다. 정말 ‘외국인’이 맞기에 내 정체성에 의심을 할 필요도 없었고 서툴러도 나는 이방인이니까 이해가 되는 이 타지가 오히려 편안했다. 늘 긴장상태에서 어깨를 움추리고 손에 힘을 주며 지냈던 오랜 세월, 내가 살고 있는 이 나라 이태리에서 그나마 호흡을 편하게 할 수 있었다. 가톨릭 국가라 그런지 휴일이 많아서 그 때마다 시골집으로 휴가를 갔었다. 이태리어 하나 못했던 때부터 지금까지 변함없이 반겨주고 갈때마다 맛있는 요리가 차려져 있는 그곳에서 배가 부른 상태로 노곤하게 지낸다. 자동차 소리 하나 나지 않는 풍경을 바라보며 집 안의 물건 하나하나를 관찰한다. 주말이 되면 차 타고 근교 여행을 가는데 아무것도 안사고 아무것도 안 해도 풍족한 기분이다. 긴 휴일이 생길 때마다 마카를 색깔별로 들고 가서 하얀 레이스가 올려진 탁자에 스케치북을 두고 내가 관찰한 것들, 마음에 들었던 표지판이나 풍경, 유난히 맛있었던 음식을 그린다. 내 많은 작업들 중에서 홀리데이 마카 드로잉은 나의 여름휴가, 추수감사절, 겨울휴가때의 기쁨 그 자체를 남긴 기록들이다.
