누군가 용기를 내어 다가왔을 때, 잠깐 걸음을 멈추고 쉴 수 있기를.

내가 아는 미술가중에서 가장 불행한 삶을 살다간 빈센트 반고흐, 그의 삶에 뭐라도 해줄수 있다면 해주고 싶었다. 누더기 같은 옷의 단추라도 달아주고 싶어서 시작한 페브릭 콜라주 작업 루이비통을 입고 건강한 표정의 빈센트를 보니 마음이 한결 가볍다.

“마음이 날다.” 연작은 일상의 경험에서 느끼는 감성들을 초현실적이고 시적인 방식으로 가상의 공간 안에서 보여주는 작업입니다. 개인적인 경험에서 출발한 이 이야기는 ‘진정성’과 ‘소통’에 관한 것으로, 이것은 ‘관계’라는 복잡한 그물망 안에서 느끼는 심리적 흔적과 정서를 조형적으로 형상화하는데 주안점을 둡니다. 또한, 경험의 이해와 공감 그리고 반성과 바람들의 이야기를 담아 가고 있습니다. 이 작업이 단순한 재현을 넘어 감각과 상상의 경계를 확장하며, 초현실적 세계와의 매개체 역할을 해주기를 바랍니다. 나름의 방식으로 만들어가는 가상의 공간들은 작가와 관객의 소통과 공감, 참여의 장이 되고, 종이비행기라는 상징적 사물 통해 물리적 공간과 심리적 공간을 넘나들며 바람과 희망의 메시지를 전달합니다. 이는 보는 이에 따라 각기 다른 감성과 그 의미들이 새롭게 재해석되어 이루어지기를 바랍니다.

Instead, he’s holding onto the ropes of a swing, pushing children higher into the air. This piece is not merely a depiction of an injured athlete in an everyday moment. It’s a symbolic reflection of the weight Ryu carries not just as a player but as a father and a person navigating life beyond the mound. The uncertainty of his career due to injury, the sting of losses, the grueling road to recovery these are all battles of their own. But he continues to fight. Just as he pushes the swing with unwavering strength, he is pushing himself toward the mound once again. Baseball isn’t a sport of constant victories. Every player faces losses, setbacks, and injuries, but the true essence of the game and of sportsmanship is in overcoming those obstacles. Ryu’s worn uniform, his bandaged arm, and the dirt on his clothes are not mere details; they are marks of resilience, of the struggle to rise again. He is still fighting not just for another win, not just for his family, but for himself. His rehabilitation is more than a recovery process; it is a testament to perseverance, a refusal to let defeat define him. And we, as spectators, await the day he steps back onto the mound, ready to throw once more. The Unyielding Game transcends the simple notion of winning and losing. It delivers a deeper message that in both sports and life, true victory is not just about the final outcome, but about the journey and the mindset along the way. In competitive sports, winning is often the ultimate goal. But for an athlete facing injuries and adversity, what truly matters is not the scoreboard, but the ability to endure to keep going, to keep fighting. The title, The Unyielding Game, doesn’t imply domination over an opponent. Rather, it speaks to the unwavering spirit that refuses to break, the resilience to stand tall even in the face of defeat. Even when he is unable to stand on the mound, Ryu Hyun-jin’s battle continues through the pain of injury, the long road of rehabilitation, and the quiet strength of fatherhood. This, too, is part of his game. And in this game, he refuses to yield. This concept extends beyond sports; it mirrors a fundamental philosophy of life. We may stumble, we may lose, but true defeat only comes when we surrender.
