Instead, the painting places him somewhere unexpected at a playground where children run and play. But if you look closely, you’ll see that this, too, is a kind of playing field for him. His arm is wrapped in bandages, his white uniform stained with dirt and sweat visible traces of injury and rehabilitation. Yet, in his hand, he isn’t gripping a baseball. Instead, he’s holding onto the ropes of a swing, pushing children higher into the air. This piece is not merely a depiction of an injured athlete in an everyday moment. It’s a symbolic reflection of the weight Ryu carries not just as a player but as a father and a person navigating life beyond the mound. The uncertainty of his career due to injury, the sting of losses, the grueling road to recovery these are all battles of their own. But he continues to fight. Just as he pushes the swing with unwavering strength, he is pushing himself toward the mound once again. Baseball isn’t a sport of constant victories.
