“권순철은 사라지거나 혹은 사라지려는 것들의 ‘흔적’을 적극적으로 드러내는 방식을 통해 시간과 망각으로 잊혀지고 희박해지는 존재를 붙들고 있는 것처럼 보인다. 다시 말해 사라져가는 형상들의 흔적을 남김으로써 그 대상으로부터 연유하는 마음의 흔적, 그것을 그렸던 물질의 흔적, 또한 그 대상의 주변을 떠도는 넋의 흔적을 다시 보여준다. 이들이 그림을 통해 나타날 때 우리는 그 존재를 다시금 생각하게 되고 그 생애를 기억하게 된다.”

Kwun SunCheol seems to be holding onto existences that are forgotten and fading with time and oblivion by actively revealing the 'traces' of things that have disappeared or are about to disappear. In other words, by leaving traces of disappearing forms, he re-shows the traces of the heart originating from that object, the traces of the material that drew it, and also the traces of the spirit lingering around the object. When these appear through his paintings, we reconsider their existence and remember their lives.

“찬란한 흰 빛으로 만개하여 짧은 시간 생명의 빛을 발한 후 어느 샌가 몸을 떨구어버리는 목련은 애수, 슬픔의 정서를 대변하는 봄의 꽃이다. ‘고귀함’, ‘숭고함’이라는 꽃말을 가졌지만, 빨리 피고 빨리 지는 목련을 통해 고통 속에서도 위엄과 희망을 잃지 않는, 인간의 생명력, 인간 존재에 대한 작가의 긍정과 낙관의 맥락을 확인할 수 있다.”

The magnolia, which blooms in brilliant white light and shines the light of life for a short time before shedding its petals before we know it, is a spring flower that represents sentiments of sorrow and sadness. Although it has the flower meanings of 'nobility' and 'sublimity,' through the magnolia that blooms quickly and fades quickly, we can confirm the artist's context of affirmation and optimism towards human vitality and human existence, which does not lose dignity and hope even in suffering.
